Can an Avian Electrocution Risk Model From California Guide Retrofitting Throughout the Western United States?

چکیده

Abstract A previously published model of avian electrocution risk, the “2014 model,” compared power poles that electrocuted birds (electrocution poles; including 21 golden eagle Aquila chrysaetos electrocutions) with not known to have (comparison poles). The 2014 produces pole-specific risk index scores between 0 and 1. rank relative so electric utilities can maximize conservation benefits per dollar spent by focusing retrofitting on greatest risk. Although creation encompassed a study population in southern California, has potential for use managing target raptors eagles throughout western United States. Use beyond California is only appropriate if similar enough predict effectively. To evaluate similarity, we examined five sources evidence: 1) consistency electrical safety codes 2) body sizes populations; structure-specific factors associated 3) electrocutions other studies, 4) electrocutions, 5) unreported electrocutions. We found although included relatively few eagles, data were sufficient create applicable also be useful helping determine equivalencies pole types seek compare small numbers high-risk large low-risk poles.

Mercury risk to avian piscivores across western United States and Canada.

The widespread distribution of mercury (Hg) threatens wildlife health, particularly piscivorous birds. Western North America is a diverse region that provides critical habitat to many piscivorous bird species, and also has a well-documented history of mercury contamination from legacy mining and atmospheric deposition. The diversity of landscapes in the west limits the distribution of avian pis...

Large-Scale Avian Influenza Surveillance in Wild Birds throughout the United States

Avian influenza is a viral disease that primarily infects wild and domestic birds, but it also can be transmitted to a variety of mammals. In 2006, the United States of America Departments of Agriculture and Interior designed a large-scale, interagency surveillance effort that sought to determine if highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses were present in wild bird populations within the Unite...

Most mountain regions in the western United States are covered by forests, which are for the most part recovering from historical harvesting and have been experiencing active fire suppression over approximately the past 100 years (Tilman and others 2000). Whereas many western landscapes are currently perceived as pristine natural systems, the Rockies, Sierra Nevada, and Cascades were essentiall...
